Student communicators from tertiary institutions across Cross River State gathered at UNICAL Radio on Tuesday as part of activities leading to the ongoing Information, Press/PRO & Media Convergence, a programme designed to strengthen collaboration among campus information managers.
The media tour, held at the University of Calabar Radio Station, brought together Directors of Information and Public Relations representatives from the University of Calabar (UNICAL), the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), the College of Nursing Sciences, and the College of Health Science, Technology and Management.
The engagement aimed to deepen cooperation among student communicators, promote the objectives of the convergence, and strengthen relationships with campus media as key partners in information management.
The delegation was led by the convener, Cynthia Maduekwe, an experienced student communicator and former Chief Press Secretary to the first female UNICAL Students’ Union Government President and Vice President. She also previously served as Director of Information, Faculty of Engineering, UNICAL, and has received multiple awards for excellence in campus journalism.
During a live appearance on UNICAL Radio, participants discussed the objectives of the convergence and highlighted the growing responsibility of student information officers in shaping public perception, promoting accurate reporting, and managing campus communication.
The interactive session focused on crisis communication, reputation management, responsible social media use, amplifying student voices through strategic storytelling, and addressing common communication challenges across campuses. Participants also explored ways to build a shared content repository, strengthen collaboration before and after the convergence, and create a support network for student communicators.
Among the resolutions reached were plans to establish trained campus media teams, adopt a unified convergence hashtag and branding strategy, publish weekly information bulletins, and develop a mentorship system connecting student communicators across institutions.
Speaking during the programme, Maduekwe stressed that Directors of Information and Public Relations officers serve as custodians of trust, noting that speed, accuracy, and empathy are essential during periods of crisis.
She also encouraged student communicators to verify information before publication and leverage media partnerships to ensure student issues receive wider national attention.
The media tour concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to building a more united, professional, and effective student communication network across Cross River State.
“We’re not just managing information. We’re managing trust,” Maduekwe said.
