Newcastle United have confirmed the departure of head coach Eddie Howe, bringing an end to his nearly five-year spell at St James’ Park after the 48-year-old decided to step down with immediate effect.

The decision followed discussions between Howe and the club’s hierarchy, with reports indicating that the Englishman had been reflecting on his future for several weeks before informing Newcastle of his desire to leave. The move is understood to have been made amicably.

Howe’s exit comes after a disappointing 2025/26 Premier League campaign in which Newcastle finished 12th, winning only five of their final 17 league matches despite high expectations. His final game in charge ended in a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City during a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

Appointed in November 2021, Howe transformed Newcastle’s fortunes after taking over a side battling relegation. During his tenure, he guided the Magpies to Champions League qualification on two occasions and delivered the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.

Newcastle are now expected to begin a new chapter, with reports linking Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle as the leading candidate to replace Howe ahead of the new Premier League season.
