The Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation has raised fresh concerns over the growing use of fake overseas job offers to lure Nigerian youths into human trafficking and forced labour across parts of West Africa.
The organisation warned that many young Nigerians are being deceived with promises of high-paying jobs and better opportunities abroad, only to end up in exploitative conditions after arriving in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
According to the group, the fraudulent recruitment schemes have been linked to QNET-related networks, where victims are allegedly persuaded to travel with the expectation of legitimate employment. Instead, many reportedly face debt bondage, restricted movement, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.
The organisation urged Nigerian youths to thoroughly verify job offers before accepting them, especially those requiring travel outside the country or upfront financial commitments. Parents and guardians were also encouraged to remain vigilant and educate their children about the dangers of deceptive recruitment schemes.
It further called for stronger collaboration among governments, law enforcement agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, philanthropists and individuals to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing human trafficking and protecting vulnerable people across Nigeria, Africa and the world.
The group stressed that increased public awareness, stricter enforcement against traffickers and cross-border cooperation remain critical in tackling the growing threat of human trafficking.
