The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.759 billion for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and intensify the fight against banditry across the state.
The approval was reached during the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, the motorcycles will be distributed to security agencies to enhance their mobility and operational capacity.
The government said the initiative is expected to support security personnel, particularly in areas where difficult terrain and limited road access can hinder rapid response to security threats.
The latest approval comes shortly after the state government procured 62 armoured vehicles at a reported cost of N27 billion for distribution to security agencies as part of measures to improve the state’s security architecture.
The additional motorcycles are expected to complement the armoured vehicles by providing security personnel with faster and more flexible means of movement during patrols and other operations.
The Sokoto government has continued to invest in security equipment as banditry and other criminal activities remain a major concern in parts of the state and other areas of north-western Nigeria.
The latest procurement is therefore aimed at strengthening the ability of security agencies to respond to threats, improve surveillance and support security operations across Sokoto State.
