Human rights lawyer and public affairs commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to pay closer attention to the revenues accruing to state governments.
Adeyanju made the call while reacting to the recent performance report released by the EFCC under its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
He commended the commission for its achievements in asset recovery and prosecution but said the fight against corruption should go beyond recovering stolen funds.
According to him, the EFCC should investigate how increased revenues received by state governments are being utilised, particularly following the removal of the petrol subsidy and the resulting increase in allocations and other fiscal inflows to the states.
Adeyanju urged the commission to act on credible allegations of financial impropriety and, where necessary, “follow the money from allocation to expenditure.”
The lawyer said Nigerians have a legitimate right to know how additional public resources are being spent.
Olukoyede had disclosed that the EFCC recovered more than N1.23 trillion, $684.48 million, £373,905.78 and €9.34 million between October 2023 and June 2026.
He also said N661.32 billion and $492.37 million had been released to beneficiaries during the period under review.
The EFCC chairman further disclosed that the commission secured 10,872 convictions from 14,476 cases filed in court within the period.
Adeyanju described the figures as evidence of progress in the anti-corruption fight but stressed that recovery alone was not enough.
He also commended the EFCC for its institutional reforms and Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force Grey List, while urging the commission to sustain its efforts.
He said the next phase of the anti-corruption campaign should focus not only on recovering resources that have been lost but also on preventing the diversion of future public funds.
