Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has revealed the Nigerian politician he considers his favourite, pointing to the leader’s achievements in education and broadcasting.
The 79-year-old actor made the disclosure during an interview on Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by content creator Adebayo Abidemi, popularly known as Isbae U. The episode was published on Saturday.
Edochie said he was not involved in politics but explained that he admired the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the Western Region, for his approach to leadership and governance.
According to the actor, Awolowo stood out because he was able to set clear objectives, explain what he intended to achieve and indicate how he planned to finance his projects.
Edochie also highlighted Awolowo’s contributions to education, particularly the introduction of free primary education in the former Western Region.
He recalled that Awolowo also played a major role in the development of television broadcasting in Nigeria, with Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) established in 1959.
The actor described the establishment of the television service as one of the major achievements associated with Awolowo’s administration.
Edochie further expressed regret that Awolowo never became President of Nigeria despite his prominent role in the country’s political history.
He said Awolowo was different from many politicians because he focused on outlining specific plans rather than simply making promises.
Edochie also mentioned former Eastern Region Premier Michael Okpara as another politician he admired.
His comments have renewed attention on Awolowo’s legacy, particularly his influence on education, broadcasting and political leadership in Nigeria.
