Three years ago today, Nigeria lost one of its brightest emerging talents in the Afrobeats and street-pop scene. On September 12, 2023, singer, rapper, and songwriter Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad (or Imole), died at the age of 27 in Lagos.
Born on January 3, 1996, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Mohbad rose from humble beginnings to become a voice for the streets. He gained widespread recognition after signing with Naira Marley’s Marlian Records and later releasing hits such as “Peace,” “Ask About Me,” “Ponmo,” and collaborations including “KPK (Ko Por Ke)” with Rexxie. His 2023 EP Blessed further cemented his growing influence before his sudden departure from the label in 2022.
Mohbad passed away after receiving treatment at home for an infection from an auxiliary nurse. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Lekki hospital. His death, followed by a rapid burial the next day, sparked nationwide outrage, protests under the #JusticeForMohbad movement, the exhumation of his body, and an extensive police investigation. An unlicensed nurse was named a prime suspect in connection with the injections administered.
The late artist is survived by his wife, Omawunmi, and their young son, who was just months old at the time of his father’s death.
Fans, fellow artists, and the Nigerian music community continue to remember Mohbad’s raw energy, distinctive voice, and contributions to street music. His songs remain popular, keeping his legacy alive three years later.
As Nigeria marks this sombre anniversary, tributes pour in once more for a star whose light was extinguished far too soon.
