Flood Turns Mechanic’s Workshop into a Nightmare in Anambra

A mechanic in Anambra State has cried out in distress after heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to sweep several vehicles belonging to his clients into a deep drainage channel, leaving him facing potential huge financial losses and customer claims.

The incident occurred during a torrential downpour that hit parts of the state, overwhelming poorly maintained drainages. According to reports, the mechanic’s workshop, located near a major road in a flood-prone area, was inundated as water levels rose rapidly. Multiple cars under repair or awaiting collection were carried away by the raging flood into the drainage system.

The distressed artisan appealed for urgent assistance, lamenting that recovering the vehicles would be difficult and costly. He expressed fears over how he would explain the situation to the car owners, many of whom had entrusted him with their vehicles for routine servicing or repairs.

Flooding remains a recurring challenge in Anambra, often worsened by blocked drainages due to indiscriminate waste disposal, illegal structures on waterways, and inadequate channelization. Communities such as Ogidi, parts of Awka, Onitsha, and surrounding areas have frequently suffered similar devastation, with vehicles, homes, and businesses affected during the rainy season.

The Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo has intensified efforts to address the problem, including drainage desilting exercises, flood control projects, and directives against building on waterways. Authorities have repeatedly urged residents to clear drainages and avoid dumping refuse into channels.

As recovery efforts continue at the scene, the mechanic’s ordeal highlights the severe impact of seasonal floods on small businesses and ordinary citizens in the state. Local emergency responders and community members are assisting in attempts to retrieve the submerged vehicles.
