Nigerian Councillor Makes History in UK Council Role

Nigerian-born Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made history by becoming the first Black and minority ethnic individual elected Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council since its founding in 1889.

Adegoke was officially appointed to the role on Thursday, 14 May 2026, during a Full Council meeting, succeeding Councillor Jan Goold. Representing the Hucknall West division for Reform UK, he now serves as the ceremonial First Citizen of the county.

“I’m privileged and honoured to hold this prestigious position, and I’m very much looking forward to travelling the length and breadth of Nottinghamshire meeting residents, staff, organisations, charities, and businesses, who all have a great love and affection for this wonderful county,” Adegoke said.

He noted that his family shares in the pride of the milestone. “My wife Imah and two children are very proud that I’ve been appointed the first minority chairman at the county council. I got into politics because I want to help people in my community and be a voice for all residents.”

Adegoke brings more than 25 years of experience in international education, public administration, and community leadership. He has previously overseen the welfare of more than 400 government-sponsored international students.

Originally from Koro in Kwara State, Nigeria, and an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, Adegoke has lived in Nottinghamshire since 2010. His appointment has been widely celebrated as a significant moment for the Nigerian diaspora and for greater representation in British local government.

During his year in office, Adegoke has chosen When You Wish Upon a Star, a Nottingham-based charity supporting children with life-threatening illnesses, as his chairman’s charity.

The achievement marks a progressive step for inclusive leadership in one of England’s historic county councils.
