Anambra Government: Obi Left Eight External Loans Still Being Serviced
The Anambra State Government has disclosed that former Governor Peter Obi left behind eight external borrowings when he exited office on 17 March 2014.
According to the state government, the loans were obtained for various development projects covering malaria control, erosion control, education, healthcare and other sectors. The present administration continues to service these facilities at a combined cost of hundreds of millions of naira every month.
In a statement, the government said: “As of when Obi left office on 17th March 2014, there were 8 different external borrowings for malaria, erosion control, education, healthcare etc which the present administration services with hundreds of millions of naira monthly.”
The disclosure forms part of the state’s ongoing public communication on the financial obligations inherited from previous administrations. Officials noted that the loans remain active and require regular monthly repayments drawn from state resources.
No further breakdown of individual loan amounts, lenders or repayment schedules was provided in the statement. The government referenced supporting documentation but did not release additional figures at the time of the announcement.
The development comes amid continued public discussion of Anambra’s fiscal history and the management of external debt across successive administrations. The state maintains that these obligations form part of the financial landscape it has managed since 2014.
