The Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, has warned political parties and candidates against recruiting or using thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements during campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nwadiogbu gave the warning during a Peace Accord signing ceremony held in Makurdi, where political party chairmen, candidates, representatives of sister security agencies and other stakeholders gathered to discuss measures for ensuring peaceful political activities in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, the commissioner urged political leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly throughout the electoral process.
He specifically cautioned political actors against using thugs or cult members to intimidate opponents, disrupt campaigns or interfere with lawful political activities.
The participating political parties and candidates subsequently signed the Peace Accord, committing themselves to rejecting political violence, respecting the rights of other political actors and cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace.
Nwadiogbu assured the parties and candidates that the police command would remain professional and impartial while providing security for all lawful political activities.
He also urged political stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the police and other security agencies, particularly when planning rallies, campaigns and other major political events.
The commissioner called on candidates, party supporters and residents to uphold the spirit of the accord and work collectively towards peaceful and credible political activities in Benue State.
