The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, has confirmed the death of Ismail Ishaq Magaji, a 400-level student of the Department of Public Administration.
Magaji reportedly died after he was hit by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his hometown, Wawa, in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The university confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, amid heightened tension linked to a dispute over land in the Wawa community. Security personnel were reportedly deployed to the area after the dispute escalated and gunfire was heard.
Magaji was said to have been caught in the shooting and sustained a gunshot injury. Recent reports identified him as a final-year student who was preparing to complete his university education before his death.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identity of the person whose bullet struck the student, have not been independently established. Reports also indicate that there was no immediate official statement from the Nigerian Army or Niger State Government giving a detailed account of the incident.
The university management expressed sadness over the loss and extended its condolences to Magaji’s family, friends, classmates and the wider university community.
The incident has also drawn calls for clarification and investigation, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urging that the circumstances surrounding the student’s death be properly investigated.
