Two United States-based self-determination advocacy groups have called on the Nigerian government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, while raising concerns about his health and demanding a referendum on self-determination.
The groups reportedly urged the Federal Government to address concerns surrounding Kanu’s well-being and consider calls for a referendum to allow the people concerned to express their views on their political future.
Their appeal adds to ongoing debates over Kanu’s detention, the agitation for an independent Biafran state and the Nigerian government’s position on national unity and territorial integrity.
Kanu, who leads IPOB, has been at the centre of a prolonged legal dispute over charges brought against him by the Nigerian government. IPOB advocates for the independence of the south-eastern region of Nigeria, a demand the Federal Government has opposed.
The groups’ call for a referendum reflects the wider disagreement over self-determination and how such demands should be addressed within Nigeria’s constitutional and legal framework.
However, the specific identities of the two groups, the details of their latest appeal and any official response from the Nigerian government should be confirmed before publication.
The latest report identifies the groups as Avid Rising Sun and Ambassadors for Self-Determination, which made their appeal in a joint statement signed by Dr Sylvester Onyia, Mazi Evans Nwankwo and Dede Maxwell. They called for Kanu’s medical evacuation and treatment, respect for his human rights, and a referendum on self-determination.
