Lagos Tragedy: Mother, Child Die as Two Container Trucks Overturn

Written by Mary Bassey

A mother and her child have died after two heavily loaded container trucks overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market, along the Apapa-bound road in Lagos State.

The tragic incident occurred over the weekend when the two 20-foot container trucks overturned, trapping the victims beneath the trucks and their cargoes, according to reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

LASTMA’s rescue and recovery team responded to the scene to evacuate the victims and clear the affected road. The agency temporarily cordoned off the area and diverted motorists through an adjoining service lane to reduce traffic congestion and prevent further accidents.

A crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle were deployed to remove the overturned trucks and their containers, while officers of the Nigeria Police Force provided security during the recovery operation.

The remains of the deceased were subsequently taken to the police mortuary in Yaba for the necessary procedures.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sadness over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

He also called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether mechanical defects, overloading, improper cargo distribution, driver negligence or other factors contributed to the accident.

The LASTMA chief urged operators of heavy-duty trucks to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, secure their cargo properly and comply with road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers associated with container-laden trucks on Lagos roads.
