The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a ₦10 billion lawsuit filed by Nollywood actor Emeka Ike against Lere Olayinka, an aide to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Justice Salim Ibrahim dismissed the suit on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after upholding objections raised by the defendants over the competence of the case. The court also dismissed the substantive suit, ruling that the actor had failed to provide sufficient proof for his claims.
Ike had approached the court over the alleged publication of his voter registration details on Olayinka’s X account in May. The disputed post reportedly contained information about the transfer of his voter registration from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory.
The actor argued that the publication of his personal information without his consent violated his fundamental right to privacy and the protection of personal data.
In the suit, Ike asked the court to award him ₦10 billion in general and aggravated damages against Olayinka and INEC. He also sought an order compelling Olayinka to remove the disputed post and issue a written apology.
Ike relied on Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, to support his claims.
However, Olayinka and INEC urged the court to dismiss the case, denying the allegations of wrongdoing.
INEC maintained that the information in question was not classified or confidential and argued that it had not breached its responsibility to protect voters’ data. Olayinka also contended that the information he published, including Ike’s name and photograph, was already publicly available.
The case was filed as Ike pursued his political ambition to contest the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency seat in Abuja in the 2027 general elections under the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He reportedly lost the party’s primary election.
With the court dismissing the suit, Ike’s demand for ₦10 billion in damages has been rejected at the trial court.
