Katsina Targets 2.6 Million Children in Fresh Polio Vaccination Drive

Written by Mary Bassey

The Katsina State Government has announced plans to immunise 2,688,730 children aged between 0 and 59 months against poliovirus as part of its November 2026 vaccination campaign.

The exercise, scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 7, will cover 28 of the state’s 34 Local Government Areas, including 299 wards and more than 17,000 settlements.

The State Primary Health Care Agency is organising the campaign in collaboration with development partners to strengthen immunisation coverage and prevent the spread of polio.

According to health officials, vaccination teams will adopt different strategies, including house-to-house visits, fixed vaccination centres, temporary posts and special teams at transit locations, to ensure eligible children are reached.

The vaccines to be administered include the novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2), bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) and fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV), depending on approved eligibility guidelines.

The campaign will also include mop-up activities to reach children who may have been missed during the initial vaccination exercise.

Speaking during a mass mobilisation dialogue in Katsina, the State Health Educator and Health Promotion Officer, Dr Mukhtar Mahmud, urged parents, caregivers, journalists, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the exercise.

He stressed the importance of public awareness and called on stakeholders to address misinformation and encourage families to cooperate with vaccination teams.

Health officials also appealed to parents to present their eligible children for vaccination, emphasising that previous participation in immunisation campaigns should not prevent children from receiving the recommended vaccines again.

The government said the exercise forms part of its continued efforts to protect children from preventable diseases and strengthen public health services across the state.
