Lagos Makes Global Crime Ranking as City Records 69.1 Points in 2026 Report

Written by Mary Bassey

Lagos State has been ranked the 27th most crime-prone city in the world, with a crime index score of 69.1 points in the 2026 Mid-Year Crime Index published by Numbeo.

The ranking places Nigeria’s commercial capital among cities with high perceived crime levels, raising fresh concerns about public safety and security in the densely populated metropolis.

According to Numbeo’s report, Lagos recorded a safety index of 30.9 points, the inverse of its crime index score.

The 2026 mid-year ranking places Lagos behind several cities, including Kingston in Jamaica, while other cities with higher crime index scores include Pretoria and Johannesburg in South Africa, Caracas in Venezuela and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

Numbeo’s Crime Index measures public perceptions of crime and safety, including concerns about robbery, theft, assault, burglary and personal security during the day and at night.

However, the ranking is based on surveys completed by website users and should not be interpreted as an official record of reported crimes or a direct measurement of actual crime rates.

The report provides an international comparison of how residents and contributors perceive safety in different cities around the world.
