The Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Joseph Ochogwu, has called on religious leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discourage narratives capable of creating division and increasing religious tensions in Nigeria.
Ochogwu warned that inflammatory statements and divisive messages could worsen religious differences, threaten peaceful coexistence and weaken national unity.
He stressed the need for religious and political leaders to promote tolerance, mutual understanding and constructive dialogue among Nigerians, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.
The IPCR Director-General also highlighted the importance of collective efforts in preventing conflicts and strengthening peaceful relationships among different communities.
He urged stakeholders to use their positions and influence to encourage messages that promote unity, respect and peaceful coexistence rather than those that fuel suspicion and division.
His appeal comes amid growing calls for responsible public communication and stronger efforts to maintain religious harmony and national cohesion in Nigeria.
The warning was made during a policy dialogue in Abuja organised by the Network of Policymakers and Religious Leaders to Support Peace, Security and Reconciliation in Nigeria. The discussion focused on protecting freedom of religion and belief through inclusive governance, security and peaceful engagement.
