N50,000 Relief Payment: What SERAP Wants Tinubu’s Government to Explain

Written by Mary Bassey

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Federal Government to publicly disclose how its N50,000 National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) is being funded, implemented and administered.

The organisation made the demand in a Freedom of Information request dated November 7, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro.

SERAP is demanding explanations on the programme’s total funding, eligibility requirements, beneficiary selection and verification processes, as well as the number of Nigerians expected to benefit across the country.

It also wants the government to clarify whether the N50,000 assistance is a one-time payment or a monthly intervention, noting inconsistencies between the ministry’s initial announcement and its subsequent frequently asked questions document.

The organisation further requested details of agreements with digital financial service providers involved in distributing the funds, including OPay, Moniepoint, ALAT, MoMo PSB and NairaGram.

SERAP also raised concerns about reports that some Nigerians who received payment notifications could not access or withdraw the money, while others were reportedly informed that they were ineligible.

It called on the government to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to monitor the programme and ensure transparency in its implementation.

The organisation warned against using the relief scheme to reward political supporters or influence voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that assistance should be distributed strictly based on genuine need.

SERAP has given the minister seven days to provide the requested information and address the concerns, warning that it may consider legal action if the government fails to comply.
