In a rare demonstration of commitment to educational development, the Member, representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bassey Akiba, earlier today, marked the International Literacy with the launch of a Fifty Million Naira Educational Support Programme.This initiative, aimed at boosting educational opportunities for students within his constituency, has been widely praised by stakeholders from the education sector.
The programme will improve access to quality education through provision of support, funds, and essential learning resources to the best of the best in public primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions within the federal Constituency.
Organized by BASSEY AKIBA FOUNDATION, the launch, held at the Conference Hall of Jorany Hotel, Calabar, was met with resounding applause from educational stakeholders, political leaders, and community members.
Addressing the audience at the unveiling ceremony, Rep. Bassey Akiba, reiterated his commitment to education as a tool for progress. “Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering development. This initiative represents my unwavering commitment to building a brighter future for our children,” he said.

In her keynote address, the Special Adviser to Cross River State Governor on Education, Dr(Mrs) Afiong Ugbaja, called on parents, teachers, and stakeholders in the education sector to inculcate worthwhile values and knowledge in students. She commended the bold initiative by Rep. Bassey Akiba, noting that such an investment in education will produce far-reaching benefits for the present and future generations.
Unveiling the programme, the Commissioner for Education, Senator(Dr) Stephen Odey, lauded the visionary leadership of Rep. Bassey Akiba, adding that the lofty programme will provide critical support to families who struggle to access quality education.
According to the Commissioner, “The Ministry of Education will offer technical support and collaborate with Rep. Bassey Akiba in ensuring the success of the educational support programme”.
Amid outpouring of goodwill, stakeholders in the education sector hailed the programme as a major leap forward for education in the Constituency and Cross River State in general.
In an interview, the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Barr. Ekpeyong Akiba, acknowledged the pivotal role of education in the socio-economic development of any nation even as he applauded the federal legislator for the giant stride.
The education support programme is poised to leapfrog the federal Constituency into a new era of academic excellence, creating the enabling environment and opportunities for learners to thrive, and repositioning the region as a model for educational development.
