Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has pledged the intervention of his administration to facilitate the completion of a long-delayed National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) along the Ikot Ekpene–Ikot Abasi axis of the state.
Eno made the commitment on Tuesday when he received a delegation of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije, at the Government House in Uyo.
The project, identified as NIPP Lot 18, includes a 330kV transmission line which is expected to strengthen electricity supply across Akwa Ibom when completed.
The governor said the state government would intervene to resolve outstanding issues delaying the project, stressing that its completion was critical to improving electricity supply and supporting industrial development in the state.
According to him, stable electricity remains important to the state’s industrialisation drive and broader economic development.
The NDPHC chief executive commended Governor Eno for his willingness to intervene, saying the company was seeking the state government’s support to address the challenges preventing completion.
Adighije disclosed that the project, which began about 20 years ago, had faced several setbacks, particularly issues surrounding wayleave compensation for communities affected by the transmission line.
She appealed to the state government to assist in resolving the compensation and community-related matters to enable NDPHC to complete the project.
Adighije also congratulated the governor on the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC) and expressed NDPHC’s readiness to collaborate with the state in developing an effective electricity market framework.
The completion of the transmission project is expected to improve electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries across Akwa Ibom and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s power sector.
