The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative through closer collaboration with security agencies, as part of efforts to improve the safety of students, teachers and educational facilities nationwide.
The move comes amid renewed concerns over attacks on schools, the abduction of students and teachers, and increasing calls for stronger security measures to protect learning environments across Nigeria.
Speaking on Friday after an interface with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Safe Schools Initiative, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the Federal Ministry of Education is working with relevant security agencies to develop a comprehensive national framework that will enhance school safety across the country’s 774 local government areas.
According to the minister, the proposed framework will focus on improving security coordination, strengthening emergency response systems, and protecting schools from security threats while ensuring that children can learn in a safe and secure environment.
Alausa stressed that the government remains committed to making schools safer through stronger partnerships with security institutions and other stakeholders. He noted that protecting lives, safeguarding educational infrastructure and preventing disruptions to learning remain key priorities under the initiative.
The Safe Schools Initiative was introduced to improve the security of schools following repeated attacks on educational institutions in different parts of the country. The programme seeks to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for teaching and learning while boosting public confidence in Nigeria’s education system.
