Forest Guards Appeal to Governor Otu for Intervention Over Unpaid Salaries

In 2024, the Cross River State Forestry Commission launched an initiative aimed at involving young Cross Riverians in the preservation and development of the state’s forestry sector. This initiative, which was part of a civil service employment drive within the Ministry of Forestry, resulted in the recruitment of over 300 individuals, who were appointed as Forest Guards. According to reports from Calabargist Media, these new employees were issued appointment letters and required to pay an acceptance fee of ₦5,300 each.

The appointment letters clearly stated that work was to commence on July 1, 2024. However, since that date, the newly appointed Forest Guards have not received any salaries. As of January 2025, more than six months have passed without payment, causing significant hardship for the employees.

Cross River Forest Guards Salary:

From the appointment letter, given to all eligible Cross Riverians, it is stated that the annual salary of Forest guards in cross river state from Grade level 4 step 2 is 605,529.12 Naira per annum

The affected workers, many of whom resigned from their previous jobs in anticipation of stable government employment, have expressed their frustration and disappointment. They are now calling on the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, to urgently intervene and address the issue. The employees have highlighted the severe challenges they faced during the recent Yuletide season, as the lack of salary left many struggling to meet their basic needs.

This situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness and accountability of the forestry employment initiative, with the affected workers seeking prompt action to resolve the matter and secure the livelihoods they were promised.
