At least five people, including four children and one adult, have lost their lives after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck the Ikot Anwatim community in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State.
The tragic incident, which occurred following a downpour, also left two other victims—an adult and a child—with injuries. They were rescued from the debris and are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
A viral video circulating on social media showed grieving parents lamenting the loss of their four children and the destruction of their home by the landslide.
In response to the disaster, the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), led by its Director-General, Mr. Efa Nyong, conducted an emergency assessment of the affected community on Saturday alongside officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
The assessment team inspected the disaster site, met with bereaved families, and evaluated the extent of the destruction caused by the landslide.
Speaking during the visit, Nyong described the loss of lives, particularly that of the children, as heartbreaking. He conveyed the condolences of the Cross River State Government to the affected families and assured them that the government would collaborate with relevant agencies and humanitarian organisations to provide relief and other necessary support.
According to him, the assessment would help document the scale of the disaster, guide humanitarian interventions, and inform long-term measures aimed at reducing the risk of future landslides.
He also urged residents living in erosion- and landslide-prone communities to remain vigilant, promptly report warning signs such as ground cracks or unusual soil movement, and comply with evacuation directives whenever issued by relevant authorities.
