An elderly woman, identified as Mrs Affiong Peters, has died after slumping while travelling in a commercial bus in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night, causing concern among passengers and prompting a police response.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.

According to the statement, at about 11:30 p.m., the driver of the commercial minibus, Mr John Okon John, reported at Atakpa Police Station that one of his passengers had suddenly become unresponsive during the journey.

The exact cause of Mrs Peters’ death has not yet been established. However, some passengers at the scene suggested she may have been experiencing stress or had an undisclosed underlying medical condition before she collapsed.

The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the deceased’s body has been deposited at a mortuary pending further examination and necessary procedures.

Authorities also urged members of the public to seek prompt medical attention whenever they notice signs of distress or sudden illness during travel.
