Ivory Coast Edge Ecuador 1-0 in Dramatic World Cup Opener

Ivory Coast secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Amad Diallo scoring a late winner to seal all three points for the African champions.

The tightly contested encounter appeared destined for a goalless draw until Diallo produced a moment of brilliance in the 90th minute. The decisive goal came after Wilfried Singo’s impressive run created space on the right flank before Diallo calmly finished from the edge of the box to break Ecuador’s resistance.

Ecuador had enjoyed strong spells during the match and came close to taking the lead on several occasions. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the woodwork, while the host  also had chances of their own, including an effort from Elye Wahi that hit the post.

Despite Ecuador’s attacking pressure and defensive discipline, Ivory Coast showed resilience and remained composed until the final whistle. The result ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run and gave Ivory Coast a perfect start to their World Cup campaign.

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae praised his team’s determination and fighting spirit after the victory, highlighting the importance of starting the tournament with confidence. The win puts the Ivorians in a strong position in Group E as they prepare for their next challenge against four-time world champions Germany.

For Ecuador, the defeat was a disappointing beginning despite a promising performance. The South American side will look to recover in their next group match against Curaçao as they continue their push for qualification to the knockout stage.

Final Score: Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador
Goal scorer: Amad Diallo (90’)
