Kogi Group Raises Alarm Over Alleged Threats to Opposition Leaders

Written by Mary Bassey

A peace advocacy group in Kogi Central, Justice and Order, Say No to Violence in Ebira Land, has condemned remarks allegedly made by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, calling for the arrest and prosecution of opposition leaders whom he reportedly described as “political criminals.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the group’s spokesperson, Alhaji Oganya Abdurazak Mamman, described the alleged comments as disturbing, warning that such rhetoric could undermine democratic values and heighten political tensions in the state.

Mamman said if the remarks were accurately reported, they represent a serious threat to democratic governance, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.

According to him, political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue, lawful democratic processes, and respect for constitutional rights, rather than through statements that could be perceived as intimidating or suppressing dissenting voices.

The group urged political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint and promote peaceful coexistence, particularly as political activities continue to intensify across the country.

It also called on security agencies and relevant authorities to remain impartial in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities and ensure that no individual or group is targeted on the basis of political affiliation.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and non-violence in Ebira Land, urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and work towards maintaining stability in Kogi State.

As of the time of filing this report, Yahaya Bello had not publicly responded to the group’s allegations regarding the reported remarks.
