The Cross River State Police Command has issued a statement clarifying its role regarding the ongoing motorcycle restriction policy in parts of Calabar Metropolis, following recent public reactions and media reports.

In a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command stated that the motorcycle restriction directive is strictly a policy of the Cross River State Government and not that of the Nigeria Police Force.

The clarification comes in response to a news report aired by the African Independent Television (AIT) featuring comments by the Special Adviser on General Duties to the Cross River State Government, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, concerning the suspension of the task force responsible for enforcing the policy after the protest that took place on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

The Police Command emphasized that the policy neither originated from nor is being enforced by the Cross River State Police Command.

“The directive restricting the operation of motorcycles in designated areas of the Calabar Metropolis is a policy of the Cross River State Government and not that of the Police,” the statement noted.

Police Restored Calm During Protest

The Command further disclosed that during the recent protest, police personnel, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, swiftly intervened to restore order and ensure the protection of lives and property.

The Police Command reiterated its strong stance against all forms of extortion, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct.
