African Teams Prove Worth of Increased World Cup Slots After Strong 2026 Performances

Written by Mary Bassey

The expanded allocation of FIFA World Cup places to African nations has been strongly vindicated by the continent’s impressive performances at the 2026 tournament, despite earlier criticism from some quarters.

Before the competition, former Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso questioned FIFA’s decision to increase Africa’s automatic qualification slots from five to nine following the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams.

Reacting to Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament, Gattuso argued that Africa had been given too many places, suggesting the continent deserved fewer World Cup slots.

However, the performances of African representatives at the tournament have challenged that view.

In addition to the nine automatic qualification places, Africa secured a 10th representative after the Democratic Republic of Congo won an intercontinental play-off, marking the country’s first World Cup appearance in 52 years.

Several African teams delivered competitive displays against some of the world’s top footballing nations, with some progressing to the knockout stages and others producing memorable results that highlighted the continent’s growing strength on the global stage.

The success of African teams has reignited discussions about the quality and competitiveness of football across the continent, with many football observers arguing that the increased World Cup allocation has given deserving nations a greater opportunity to showcase their talent.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, Africa’s performances are increasingly being viewed as evidence that the continent has earned its expanded representation on football’s biggest stage.
