A US-based Nigerian basketball player, Daniel Adegboyega, has been arrested in Alabama after being accused of first-degree rape by forcible compulsion, an allegation that has drawn widespread attention in the United States.
Adegboyega, 21, who recently joined Jacksonville State University’s men’s basketball team ahead of the upcoming season, was arrested in July by officers of the Jacksonville Police Department at his apartment in Jacksonville, Alabama, according to reports by 1819 News and WVTM 13.
Court records indicate that he is currently being held without bond at the Calhoun County Jail. The records also show that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration hold on him, which could affect his immigration status as the case progresses.
Investigators told the court that the alleged victim visited Adegboyega’s apartment on July 28 to watch a movie. Authorities allege that the encounter later turned into a sexual assault, leading to the filing of a first-degree rape charge under Alabama law, which classifies rape by forcible compulsion as a Class A felony.
The case remains under investigation, and no trial date has been announced. As with all criminal cases, the allegations against Adegboyega have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless found guilty.
