President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, depending on rank.
The new salary structure, announced by the Presidency on Tuesday, is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force. The adjustment will take effect from September 1, 2026.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development in a statement, explaining that the salary review was designed to favour junior personnel, who will receive the highest percentage increases.
According to the statement, the pay adjustment follows a graduated structure in which lower-ranking officers and enlisted personnel receive larger salary increases than their senior counterparts.
Under the new arrangement, officers from the rank of Colonel and above—including Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase, while more junior personnel will enjoy increases of up to 80 per cent.
The Federal Government said the salary review is part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel, boost morale, and strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
The implementation of the new salary package is scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026, making it one of the most significant military welfare reforms in recent years.
