The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments about former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, describing the remarks as a sign of growing concern over the strength of the opposition.
The party said Wike’s repeated attacks on Amaechi do not reflect political confidence but rather suggest unease about the increasing momentum of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reaction follows Wike’s media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, where he declared that Amaechi no longer possesses the political influence to win elections in Rivers State. The FCT minister also expressed confidence that any political party he supports in the state would emerge victorious in the 2027 governorship election.
However, the ADC dismissed the claim, insisting that no election should be considered settled before the people cast their votes.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Chizi Enyi, argued that Nigeria’s political landscape has changed significantly, with voters becoming more informed and determined to make independent choices.
According to Enyi, every election presents unique political realities, stressing that the 2027 contest in Rivers State will not be an exception.
He further alleged that Wike’s persistent criticism of Amaechi reflects an unsuccessful attempt to diminish the former Rivers governor’s political standing both within the state and across the country.
The ADC maintained that political influence is ultimately determined by the electorate and urged political leaders to allow voters, rather than public declarations, to decide the outcome of future elections.
