Nigeria has recorded about four consecutive years without a reported piracy incident in its territorial waters, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has disclosed.
Abbas made the disclosure on Tuesday in Calabar while speaking at the graduation ceremony of participants of Naval Warfare Course 10 at the Naval War College Nigeria.
According to the Naval Chief, the development reflects improvements in maritime security and the impact of sustained naval operations and collaboration among security and maritime agencies.
He said the Nigerian Navy would continue to maintain its operational tempo to prevent piracy and other emerging threats within the country’s maritime domain.
“Encouragingly, Nigeria has maintained zero reported piracy incidents in our waters for four consecutive years, while incidents across the wider Gulf of Guinea have declined significantly,” Abbas said.
The progress comes amid increased surveillance, patrols and inter-agency cooperation involving the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). In August 2026, both agencies also renewed their maritime security partnership, including provisions for improved information sharing and coordinated responses to maritime incidents.
The Naval Chief, however, has previously acknowledged that isolated cases of sea robbery and other maritime crimes remain areas of concern. He stressed that the Navy would continue strengthening its presence and surveillance across Nigeria’s maritime space.
The International Maritime Organization distinguishes piracy from armed robbery against ships, with piracy generally relating to incidents in international waters, while armed robbery against ships occurs within a state’s territorial waters.
Nigeria’s sustained absence of reported piracy incidents marks a significant change from the period when the Gulf of Guinea was considered a major global piracy hotspot.
