Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu has revealed how emotionally devastating Nigeria’s quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was, saying some players struggled to eat the following day.
The Super Falcons’ hopes of defending their continental title were ended after Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 in their quarter-final clash in Casablanca.
The result was particularly painful for the Nigerian team as it also denied them an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
According to Kanu, the disappointment affected the players deeply, with some finding it difficult to eat the day after the defeat as they struggled to come to terms with the result.
Cameroon’s victory earned the Indomitable Lionesses a place in the WAFCON semi-finals and one of Africa’s automatic qualification spots for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will have to go through the World Cup playoff route to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Kanu’s comments highlight the emotional toll of the defeat on the Super Falcons, who had been aiming to retain their African crown and secure another appearance at the Women’s World Cup.
Despite the setback, Nigeria will now have to regroup and focus on the remaining qualification pathway as they seek to secure a place at the global tournament.
The quarter-final exit brought an unexpected end to Nigeria’s title defence and left the nine-time African champions facing a more difficult route to the 2027 World Cup.
