In a deeply heartbreaking turn of events, a 30-year-old mother, Mercy Michael, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a chief magistrates’ court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for the alleged killing of her eight-month-old daughter with rat poison.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) charged Michael with culpable homicide, under Section 189 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

How Rat Poison Killed The Baby

Prosecutor Marcus Audu revealed the grim details:

On December 10, Mercy Michael reportedly fed her infant daughter rat poison for reasons that remain unclear.

The weight of this loss was palpable as the prosecutor recounted the sequence of events, leaving many to wonder what could drive a mother to such a devastating act.

The baby was rushed to the General Hospital in Zonkwa as her life hung in the balance. Despite desperate efforts, she passed away the next day, her life cut tragically short.

The case first reached the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kafanchan. A place known for its work with vulnerable victims, before being referred to the NSCDC for further investigation.

Chief Magistrate Samson Kwasu, was unable to take Michael’s plea due to jurisdictional limitations.

However, he directed the case file to be sent to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

In the meantime, the court adjourned the case until December 17, leaving an air of solemnity as the community awaits answers.

This incident is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the silent struggles that some endure.

It highlights the need for support systems to address mental health challenges and socio-economic pressures. These may push individuals to breaking points.

As we mourn the loss of life so young and pure, we are left with a haunting question:

How can society prevent such tragedies?

For now, the pain of this loss echoes deeply, a sorrowful tale of a child whose light was extinguished far too soon.
