The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has responded to the controversy surrounding the appointment of the Acting Head of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), insisting that the decision followed due process and complied with the institution’s regulations.
In a statement issued by the university’s management, UNICAL said it became aware of a letter dated July 31, 2026, allegedly written by Mr. Emmanuel Effa and circulated on social media, challenging the appointment.
Management expressed concern that the matter was taken to social media instead of being addressed through the university’s established channels for resolving grievances. It stressed that such an approach was inconsistent with institutional procedures for staff, students, and alumni.
The university also clarified that there is no officially recognised body known as the “SLT Alumni Forum” within the Department of Science Laboratory Technology or the University of Calabar Alumni Association.
According to the statement, the Acting Head’s appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor after consultations with the appropriate university authorities. Management described the move as an administrative decision aimed at ensuring continuity and effective leadership in the department.
UNICAL further assured students and stakeholders that the appointment has not affected the department’s academic structure, curriculum, or the quality of training. It maintained that qualified academic staff remain responsible for teaching and supervision, in line with the standards of relevant regulatory bodies.
Reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, professionalism, and due process, the university urged alumni and other stakeholders to channel concerns through recognised platforms rather than social media. Management also warned against actions capable of damaging the institution’s reputation, assuring the university community that it remains committed to fairness, transparency, and the continued growth of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.
