UNICAL Threatens Sanctions Over Disorderly Sign-Out Activities

Written by Mary Bassey

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has warned final-year students against engaging in wild post-examination celebrations, commonly known as “sign-out” activities, stressing that offenders will face disciplinary action.

The warning was contained in a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka Icha, who expressed concern over the increasing trend of unlawful celebrations by students after writing their final examinations.

According to the statement, the university has maintained its ban on the practice of “flying of colours,” reckless driving, and other forms of disorderly behaviour carried out under the guise of celebrating the completion of academic programmes.

The Registrar urged all students, particularly graduating students, to comply with the directive and avoid any activity capable of disrupting peace and order within and around the campus.

She also noted that the prohibition extends to gatherings around the university gates as well as all cult-related activities, emphasizing that the directive remains fully in force.

The university warned that any student or group found violating the order would be sanctioned in line with the institution’s regulations.

To ensure strict compliance, the Acting Chief Security Officer has been directed to enforce the directive across the campus and its surrounding areas.

The management appealed to all members of the university community to cooperate with the authorities by adhering to the rules and maintaining a peaceful environment.
