CALABAR — The South-South Zonal Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Clement Agiangie, has warned that the 2027 General Election must be free, fair and credible, declaring that any attempt to manipulate the electoral process or subvert the will of the people will be firmly resisted through lawful and democratic means.
Agiangie, who made the declaration while addressing NDC stakeholders in Calabar, said Nigeria could no longer afford elections characterised by intimidation, vote-buying, electoral malpractice and the abuse of state power.
He maintained that the legitimacy of any government must come from the freely expressed will of the electorate, rather than the influence of money, incumbency or political intimidation.
“A tree does not stand because of the noise around it; it stands because its roots are deep.”
According to him, the roots of democracy are justice, transparency, accountability and the unrestrained expression of the people’s will through the ballot box.
The NDC chieftain called on all political parties, particularly the ruling party, to respect the rules of democratic engagement and resist every temptation to compromise the electoral process.
He warned that political power acquired through manipulation could neither command genuine legitimacy nor withstand the judgement of history.
Agiangie said the Nigeria Democratic Congress had emerged with a mission to restore public confidence in governance, rebuild Nigeria’s democratic institutions, revive the economy and reposition the country for a more prosperous and respected future within the comity of nations.
CALL FOR GLOBAL ATTENTION
The NDC South-South Zonal Secretary also appealed to the international community, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, accredited election observers and relevant monitoring agencies to pay close attention to Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
He said the international community must remain vigilant because Nigerians were increasingly determined to defend their democratic rights peacefully and within the ambit of the law.
Agiangie condemned the persistent culture of vote-buying, describing it as an affront to the dignity of citizens and a dangerous threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“The future of our children must never be exchanged for a few pieces of silver. A hungry stomach may be tempted today, but a stolen election produces suffering for generations.”
He urged Nigerians not to allow economic hardship to be exploited by politicians seeking to purchase their votes, stressing that the temporary benefits of vote-selling could never compensate for the long-term consequences of electing incompetent or unaccountable leaders.
PROTECT YOUR VOTE
Agiangie further urged eligible voters to register, turn out in large numbers on election day, cast their ballots and remain vigilant throughout the electoral process.
He called on citizens to protect their votes and insist that every lawful vote be properly counted and recorded, while pursuing any electoral grievances through peaceful and constitutional channels.
“The drumbeat of freedom is louder than the footsteps of oppression. When the people stand together, no amount of money can purchase their collective conscience.”
The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful political participation, credible elections and the supremacy of the people’s mandate.
Agiangie insisted that the 2027 General Election must be remembered as a defining moment when the collective will of Nigerians prevailed over rigging, intimidation, vote-buying and the undue influence of money.
