Obudu came alive today as Dr. Martha Agba, Founder of the WHEN Initiative Foundation, flagged off her small-scale business empowerment program for youths and women. The event, held at Radiant Crest Hall, witnessed a massive turnout as thousands of participants were empowered with financial support to grow their businesses.
The ceremony attracted the presence of respected traditional rulers including HRH Utsu Edward Undiebe, HRH Utsu Patrick Akeh Ishoja, Utsu Emmanuel Ugbong, Utsu James Andelehe, Utsu Godfrey Asu, Utsu Isaac Liwhuliwe and Utsu Pius Ukpepi. Also in attendance was the Cross River State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Agnes Atsu, who praised the initiative and urged beneficiaries to put the grants to productive use.
Women leaders, female councilors, representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, and participants from all ten wards of Obudu, including indigenous communities, graced the occasion. In a heartwarming gesture, Dr. Agba ensured that no one left the venue without support. Beneficiaries such as Grace Ushie received ₦200,000, Alorye Bessel ₦100,000, and Kate Udie ₦50,000, among many others.
Beyond business support, Dr. Agba pledged to extend her compassion to the vulnerable. She committed to caring for a pregnant mentally ill woman until childbirth and for one year afterwards, while also promising assistance to physically challenged persons.
The Chairlady of Market Women in Obudu applauded the program, describing it as a bold step toward grassroots development. With the backing of the Cross River Microfinance Bank, the grants will be properly monitored and evaluated to ensure long-term impact and sustainability.
