Historic Shift: Premier League to Begin Season Without a Champions League-Winning Coach

Written by Peter Ogboaka

Premier League Set for Historic First Since 1999 as Champions League-Winning Managers Disappear

The Premier League will enter the 2026/27 season without a single active UEFA Champions League-winning manager on its touchlines — a remarkable statistic not seen in over a quarter of a century.

The last time England’s top flight began a season without a manager who had lifted Europe’s most prestigious club trophy was in 1999. Since then, the league has consistently featured some of football’s most decorated coaches, including serial Champions League winners such as José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Benítez, Thomas Tuchel, Jürgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, and others.

However, with Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City and the exits of several other elite managers in recent years, the Premier League is set to break a 27-year trend.

The development highlights a changing of the guard in English football. While the league remains home to some of the game’s brightest coaching talents, none of the current managers have yet reached the pinnacle of European club football by winning the Champions League.

Several managers will have the opportunity to end the drought in the coming years. Coaches competing in Europe next season will be aiming not only for domestic success but also for the chance to join the exclusive group of Champions League-winning managers.

The statistic also underlines the increasing competitiveness of modern football. Many of the Premier League’s current managers have built strong reputations through innovative tactics, player development, and domestic achievements, but the Champions League remains the ultimate benchmark for managerial greatness.

As the new season approaches, fans will witness a fresh era in the Premier League — one defined less by established European champions and more by ambitious managers seeking to make their mark on the continental stage.

For the first time since 1999, England’s top division will begin a campaign without a single Champions League-winning manager in the dugout, marking the end of one era and perhaps the beginning of another.
