Kano Moves to Tighten Private School Rules — Here’s What Schools Must Now Do

Written by Mary Bassey

The Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board has directed all private schools operating in the state to renew their operating licences annually as part of measures to strengthen regulation and improve educational standards.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Baba Abubakar-Umar, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Tuesday.

According to him, each private school is required to pay an annual operating licence fee of ₦6,000 to maintain its authorisation to operate.

Abubakar-Umar stressed that licensing was not merely a revenue-generating measure but was also intended to ensure that private schools complied with approved educational requirements and maintained acceptable standards.

He urged proprietors and school administrators to adhere strictly to the regulations governing private educational institutions in the state.

The latest directive comes amid broader efforts by the Kano State Government to strengthen oversight of private schools. In August, the Kano State House of Assembly passed an amendment to the law regulating private and voluntary institutions, including provisions aimed at controlling arbitrary increases in school fees.

The amended framework also requires private schools to comply with approved curricula and other educational standards, with authorities warning that schools that violate the regulations could face sanctions, including temporary or permanent closure.

The Kano State Ministry of Education maintains records of schools operating across the state, reflecting the government’s ongoing monitoring of educational institutions.

The board is expected to continue monitoring compliance as the state seeks to improve the quality and administration of private education.
