The Chief Imam of Ilaro Central Mosque, Ogun State, Sheikh Muhammad Tajudeen Mustapha-Adewunmi, has explained why he returned N25 million entrusted to him by late veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The cleric disclosed that the money was given to him by the actor while he was receiving treatment, with instructions to use it for the renovation or rebuilding of his grandfather’s family house in Ilaro.
Adewunmi’s clarification came amid reports and speculation that the N25 million was intended for a mosque project.
According to the Imam, Ogogo personally entrusted the money to him before his death and made clear its intended purpose.
Following the actor’s death, the cleric said he preserved the funds rather than treating them as his personal property.
Ogogo died on August 23, 2026, at the age of 66, and was buried in Ilaro, Ogun State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Imam later met with members of Ogogo’s family and explained the circumstances surrounding the money. The funds were subsequently returned to the late actor’s family.
The family confirmed receipt of the N25 million during the eighth-day Fidau prayer held in Ilaro on August 31.
The development attracted attention after Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun publicly commended the Chief Imam for what he described as an act of honesty and integrity.
Balogun also recalled the Imam’s previous conduct while serving as Amir Hajj for Ogun State, saying he returned unspent funds from the pilgrimage to the state government.
The return of Ogogo’s money has since generated discussions about trust, accountability and integrity, particularly when handling funds belonging to someone who has died.
