Gridlock in Ibadan as Protesters Demand Release of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers

Written by Mary Bassey

Traffic was brought to a standstill in parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday after protesters barricaded the busy Iwo Road axis, causing severe gridlock and leaving hundreds of motorists and commuters stranded.

The protest, organised by members of the Take It Back Movement, began at about 10:00 a.m. as demonstrators marched through the area, demanding urgent government action to tackle insecurity and secure the immediate release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Eyewitnesses said the protesters blocked major sections of the road while chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with messages calling on the authorities to prioritize the safety of citizens and intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims.

The demonstration significantly disrupted traffic flow, forcing commuters to seek alternative routes while many passengers were left stranded for hours.

The protesters condemned the growing wave of kidnappings and insecurity in parts of the state, urging both the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly in rescuing the abducted pupils and their teachers.

They stressed that schools should remain safe environments for learning and called for stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had been deployed to the area to monitor the protest and maintain law and order, while traffic officials worked to ease congestion around the affected routes.

The demonstrators maintained that they would continue to demand justice and improved security until concrete action is taken to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims.
