Peter Obi Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation, Cites Economic Hardship and Governance Failures

Written by Mary Bassey

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and poor governance across the country.

Obi made the call in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he argued that leaders should be held accountable when they fail to deliver effective governance and improve the welfare of citizens.

According to the former Anambra State governor, his position was inspired by political developments in the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his intention to step down. Obi said the move reflected a culture of political responsibility and accountability, which he believes should also be embraced in Nigeria.

He maintained that Nigeria is grappling with severe economic challenges, including soaring inflation, a high cost of living, widespread unemployment, and declining purchasing power. Obi also pointed to persistent insecurity in several parts of the country, stating that many Nigerians continue to face hardship despite government assurances.

The former presidential candidate stressed that public office is a position of service and that leaders must be willing to accept responsibility when governance falls short of citizens’ expectations.

His remarks have since generated widespread reactions across social media, with supporters and critics expressing differing opinions on whether the President should resign or remain in office to continue implementing his administration’s policies.

President Tinubu’s administration has consistently defended its economic reforms, arguing that the policies are necessary to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for long-term growth, despite the short-term hardships being experienced by many Nigerians.

The latest statement by Obi is expected to further fuel political debate over the state of the nation’s economy, security, and overall governance
