You Cannot Be a Police Officer and a Thief” – FCT Police Commissioner Warns Officers Against Extortion

Written by Mary Bassey

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has issued a stern warning to officers under the command, directing them to immediately stop the extortion of commercial tricycle (Keke) operators, motorists, and other road users across Abuja.

Speaking during an address to police personnel, the commissioner emphasized that officers found engaging in any form of extortion would face disciplinary action, stressing that such conduct tarnishes the image of the Nigeria Police Force.

“You cannot be both a police officer and a thief. We don’t want to hear any reports of extorting Keke riders or motorists in Abuja. If we hear it, you are a thief,” Sanusi declared.

The CP reiterated that the command is committed to professionalism, accountability, and ethical policing, urging officers to carry out their duties with integrity while respecting the rights of members of the public.

His remarks come amid persistent complaints from residents over alleged harassment and illegal collection of money from commercial drivers and other road users by some security personnel. The FCT Police Command says it remains determined to restore public confidence by ensuring that officers who violate the law or abuse their authority are held accountable.

A video of the commissioner’s address has since circulated on social media, drawing reactions from Nigerians, many of whom praised the strong stance against police misconduct.
