FG Approves Major NYSC Reforms. Here Are The Major Changes

Written by calabarGist

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.

The landmark reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), are aimed at transforming the NYSC into a more skills-driven, productivity-focused, and youth-empowering institution that aligns with Nigeria’s current economic and workforce needs.

Key Highlights of the NYSC Reforms

Six-Week Orientation Camp

The traditional three-week orientation programme has been extended to six weeks. The redesigned camp will place greater emphasis on:

  • Leadership development
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Digital skills
  • Career mapping
  • Specialized training based on corps members’ career interests and academic backgrounds.

Civilian Leadership Structure

For the first time in the scheme’s 53-year history, NYSC will operate under a civilian-led governance structure. While the military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide, the operational leadership of the scheme will now be managed by civilians.

New NYSC Uniform

The Federal Government also approved a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to reflect professionalism, national pride, and the renewed identity of the scheme.

Graduation Ceremony Replaces Passing Out Parade

The long-standing Passing Out Parade (POP) will be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony, recognizing the completion of national service in a more academic and professional manner.

Additional Reforms

Beyond the headline changes, the Federal Government also approved several new initiatives to modernize the scheme, including:

  • A technology-driven call-up process to improve mobilization.
  • Risk-sensitive deployment aimed at enhancing the safety and security of corps members.
  • Skills-based primary assignments aligned with graduates’ qualifications and career aspirations.
  • A national grading and certification system for orientation camps to improve standards nationwide.
  • The creation of specialized career streams, including agriculture, healthcare, education, technology, legal services, infrastructure, public service, enterprise, creative economy, green economy, and security-related sectors.

Legal Backing for the Reforms

To facilitate implementation, the Federal Executive Council has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to commence amendments to the NYSC Act and relevant regulations, providing the legal framework required for the reforms.

The reforms are expected to reposition the NYSC beyond its traditional role of promoting national unity by equipping Nigerian graduates with practical skills, improving employability, encouraging entrepreneurship, and preparing them for the demands of a rapidly evolving economy.
