Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the worsening food insecurity in northern Nigeria, warning that the country is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis that requires urgent government intervention.
Obi’s reaction followed the release of a recent United Nations assessment indicating that more than 17 million people across nine northern states are currently experiencing crisis-level food insecurity, with millions struggling to access adequate meals due to persistent insecurity, economic hardship, climate-related shocks, and rising food prices.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, the former Anambra State governor described the situation as “heartbreaking and avoidable,” stressing that no nation can achieve sustainable development while a significant portion of its population suffers from hunger.
He called on the Federal Government, state governments, development partners, and humanitarian organisations to intensify efforts to tackle the root causes of food insecurity, including armed conflict, displacement of farming communities, inflation, and poor agricultural productivity.
Obi also urged authorities to prioritise investments in agriculture, improve security in farming communities, and implement policies that would boost food production and make essential food items more affordable for Nigerians.
According to the latest food security projections by the United Nations and humanitarian agencies, millions of vulnerable households across northern Nigeria are expected to require urgent food assistance in the coming months if swift interventions are not implemented.
The former presidential candidate reiterated that addressing hunger should remain a national priority, insisting that ensuring food security is essential to protecting lives, reducing poverty, and promoting economic stability across the country.
