Senate Issues Fresh Warning to South Africa

Written by Mary Bassey

The Nigerian Senate has warned that the Federal Government may be forced to reassess its diplomatic relationship with South Africa if renewed xenophobic attacks and threats against Nigerians living in the country continue.

The warning followed a motion presented during Tuesday’s plenary by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South Senatorial District, who raised concerns over reports of renewed hostility towards Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

According to the lawmaker, Nigerians residing in South Africa were allegedly given a June 30, 2026, ultimatum by groups reportedly demanding that foreign nationals leave certain communities. He described the development as a serious threat to the lives, safety and economic well-being of Nigerians living and doing business in the country.

Senators condemned the reported intimidation, harassment and recurring xenophobic attacks, noting that such actions violate fundamental human rights and threaten the long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship between both countries.

The upper legislative chamber urged the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to immediately engage South African authorities to ensure the protection of Nigerians and their businesses.

Lawmakers also called on the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa to closely monitor the situation, provide necessary support to affected citizens and keep the government informed of further developments.

In addition, the Senate directed its relevant committees to carry out a fresh investigation into the reported incidents and recommend measures to safeguard Nigerians living abroad while strengthening diplomatic efforts to prevent future attacks.

The Senate reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens wherever they reside and stressed that any continued attacks on Nigerians abroad would not be tolerated.
