How Zambia’s Vice President Escape Helicopter Crash

Written by Mary Bassey

Zambia’s Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, escaped unhurt after a helicopter carrying her and seven other people crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday during a campaign tour ahead of the country’s general elections.

According to officials, the aircraft went down moments after departing from a campaign venue in the country’s northwestern region. All eight occupants, including the vice president, survived the incident without injuries. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and aviation authorities have launched an investigation.

Nalumango was participating in campaign activities for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) ahead of Zambia’s general election scheduled for August 13.

President Hakainde Hichilema, who is seeking a second five-year term in office, is leading the UPND campaign as the country prepares for the highly anticipated polls. Zambia, one of Africa’s leading copper producers, is expected to hold a closely watched election amid efforts to strengthen economic growth and governance.

Government officials have assured the public that the vice president is safe and in good health, while investigations continue to determine what led to the helicopter accident.
