Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticised the Federal Government over the abduction of students, a school principal and a National Examinations Council (NECO) official during an attack on a secondary school in Kogi State.
Reacting to the incident on Wednesday, Atiku described the attack on Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, as a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity across the country and its devastating impact on Nigeria’s education sector.
Gunmen reportedly stormed the school while students were sitting for the ongoing Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), abducting the school principal, a NECO ad-hoc official and several candidates. The attack has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of schools and examination centres nationwide.
In a statement, Atiku accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of failing to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and securing educational institutions. He argued that repeated attacks on schools have created fear among students, parents and teachers, while threatening access to quality education.
The former vice president warned that continued insecurity in schools could undermine the future of millions of Nigerian children if urgent measures are not taken. He called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims, strengthen security around schools and ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
The latest abduction adds to the growing number of attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country, raising renewed calls for improved security and stronger protection of schools.
